World Trade Center attack memorabilia from 49 to 51 Chambers Street for 2002

Description

The Community Assistance Unit (CAU) provided aid, comfort, and information to the families of victims of the World Trade Center (WTC) attack (2001) and members of the communities impacted by the attack. The CAU set up a second Family Assistance Center, after the Center at Pier 94 closed, to disseminate information, counsel victims, and provide an activity center for children, in the lobby of the former Emigrant Savings Bank. WTC memorabilia, banners, posters, signs, and other decorative material were sent to the Center and placed around the area. When the Center closed, the items were recovered by the Municipal Archives staff. This material includes New York State travel posters, artwork and banners (some possibly done by children at the activity center), memorial signature books, and other items. A summary list of the material was prepared. In July 2009 items were added that had been at the bank site, commemorative artwork from Tyler, Texas, a golden wooden eagle plaque, photo posters of the WTC, and commemorative cards to New York City provided for signature from Project HEART.
