Water grants, property lines, pier placements, and ferry boat layouts file maps for 1880 to 1930

Description

Accession is comprised of maps and drawings filed by the Department's personnel as a reference source. The "File Maps" show water grants, property lines, pier placements, ferry boat layouts, and other subjects. The maps and drawings document changes in the waterfront or proposed changes; others were used as exhibits for law suits. The records came from a variety of sources, such as other New York City agencies, or hand drawn by the Department's personnel. Others were purchased as "ready printed' maps and drawings. Materials are arranged by river or borough. The Department of Docks, established in 1870, had exclusive control of all the wharf property belonging to the City and the regulations of privately-owned wharf property. The name of the agency has changed several times through the years: Department of Docks and Ferries, 1898; Department of Docks, 1919; Department of Marine and Aviation, 1942; Department of Ports and Terminal, 1968; Department of Ports, International Trade and Commerce, 1986; and Department of Ports and Trade, 1990.
