Department of Docks building construction files for 1880 to 1976

Description

The Department of Docks, established in 1870, had exclusive control of all the wharf property owned by the City and the regulation of privately-owned wharf property. The name of the agency has changed several times through the years: Department of Docks and Ferries in 1898, Department of Docks in 1919, Department of Marine and Aviation in 1942, Department of Ports and Terminal in 1968, Department of Ports, International Trade and Commerce in 1986, and Department of Ports and Trade in 1990. This accession contains plans, drawings, forms and correspondence. The records include applications for original construction of and subsequent alterations to buildings, work permits, certificates of occupancy and related documents. They contain specifications and details of construction. These records, originally Department of Building records, were transferred to Ports and Trade when the city acquired the properties on which the buildings stood. The buildings referenced are in Brooklyn and Staten Island. Documentation for the Staten Island transfer of records, in 1976, listing the individual folders, can be found in the last box. The materials are arranged by block and lot.
