World Trade Center site memorial pools from the memorial service held in 2008

Description

On September 11, 2008 Mayor Michael Bloomberg held a memorial service at the World Trade Center site for the victims of the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. Family members gathered for services and placed flowers and memorabilia in a reflecting pool (water filled) with square wooden insets representing the footprints of the twin towers that were destroyed during the World Trade Center attack. The accession consists of the reflecting pool from the memorial service. The pool itself was circular, approximately eighty feet in circumference. The frame was selected for preservation because it contains handwritten messages by ceremony participants. It was disassembled into four horizontal curved wood framing elements (ledges) and the four wooden sides, constructed over a welded aluminum inner frame. The ledges and sides were inscribed as in 2006 and previous years. See Accession 2004-076, et al.
