Applications to Exhibit Children in Theatres, Television and Radio, 1946-1950

Scope and Contents

This series contains applications requesting consent for children to perform in professional theatre, television and radio productions. Written consent from the Mayor was required for any child performer under the age of 16, as mandated by the now-depreceated Section 485 of the New York Penal Code, “Certain employment of children prohibited.” At least 48 hours before the application was submitted to the Mayor, a notice and copy of it had to be sent to the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC). As such, the applications in this series are typically attached to correspondence from the NYSPCC with their judgement on whether or not consent should be granted. Applications contain information on the child’s real and stage name, age and date of birth, place of birth, name and address of their parents or guardians, place of exhibition, nature of performance, time and duration of performance, number of performances, and the dates of performance.
