Integration, 1949-1983

Scope and Contents

Records including correspondence, memoranda, leaflets, and publications reflecting the United Parents Association’s continuing intensive involvement in school desegregation and integration controversies and programs since before the Brown decision. Correspondence files and topical files reflect the United Parents Association’s interaction with government agencies, citizen groups, and local parent groups. Notable are files documenting the work of the Board of Education’s Commission on Integration, which included a United Parents Association representative, and those relating to efforts to rezone schools for integration, in which the United Parents Association’s pro-integration position is mediated by its role as representative of local parents.

Arrangement

Apparently because so many overlapping activities relating to integration were occurring around the city during the same time period, the United Parents Association maintained much of the documentation in an undifferentiated “integration” file. This has been largely retained in this subseries. Thus, the subseries is arranged alphabetically, then chronologically within headings, with the heading “Integration” comprising about one fourth of the material.
