Hope Gilbert and family memorabilia, 1915-1978

Scope and Contents

An extended subseries of memorabilia documenting the formal turning points in the experience of Hope August Gilbert as she passed through the various components of the public school system, from grade school, through high school and college, to teacher of English. The subseries also contains some records of other family members. Included are student materials of Hope August and Murray Gilbert; teaching documents of Hope August and, after their marriage in 1961, of Hope (August) Gilbert. Also included is one item from Mary Nemtschen, mother of Hope (August) Gilbert. [“Hope Gilbert” is used throughout the inventory for simplicity.]

Accompanying these records is a digital audio recording of a discussion about the family’s experiences among Elissa Gilbert (daughter of Hope Gilbert and donor of the materials), Sylvia Kollar, Director of the Archives, and David Ment, Curator of the Board of Education records, held December 16, 2014.
