School safety, 1993-1996
Scope and Contents
This subseries contains documents and reports related to an investigation of school safety in 1995. The Costikyan Report, issued in 1995, found that the Division of School Safety was underreporting incidents in public schools and gave the division an âFâ for its reporting skills. The report suggested the implementation of an automated system to make reporting more efficient. The Mayor created a Commission of School Safety who further investigated the Division of School Safety and suggested a collaboration between School Safety and the New York City Police Department to handle incidents and to monitor the progress of School Safety officers in schools. The Commission also suggested hiring reforms and new training sessions to be conducted by the NYPD. Documents and newspapers show that School Safety was eventually merged with the NYPD.
