Latin American Scholarship Committee, 1941-1954
Scope and Contents
Between 1942 and 1946, the City of New York administered a Latin American student scholarship fund. It was developed under the aegis of Mayor La Guardia as a response to the demonstrated need for increased education in Latin American countries. The scholarships provided a one-year education in New York City, plus a monthly living stipend and housing arrangements, for twenty students per year.
The following persons were directly involved in the management of the scholarship program: J. Stanton Ribbons, Director, Latin American Scholarship Committee (also the Federal Coordinator for Inter-American Relations operating out of the Department of Commerce); Nelson Rockefeller, Coordinator of Commercial and Cultural Relations; and Rebecca B. Rankin, Reference Librarian, Municipal Library and Secretary, New York City Committee for Latin American Scholarships, Inc.
The scholarships were funded by several corporate sponsors and underwritten by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and directed by Dr. Henry A. Moe. The scholarship recipients were housed at New York City’s International House.
