Press releases, 1969-1978, bulk: 1970-1978

Scope and Contents

The series contains approximately 1,500 press releases and related material issued by Bronx Borough President Robert Abrams during the period of December 31, 1969, to November 30, 1978. The series is described at the item level. The original press release titles have been retained with some modifications for clarity or length. This function allows for subject access to the press releases. The records consist primarily of one- to three-page press releases stating the Bronx Borough President’s position or action taken on national, state, and local issues affecting the borough. The press releases document efforts regarding mass transit, housing, healthcare, crime, economic problems, utility costs, insurance, banking, politics, cultural events, pollution, consumer affairs, government structure, the Vietnam War, various types of discrimination, and other issues on behalf of the Bronx. Several of the releases reference Abrams’ public television program, The Urban Challenge, on WNYC-TV. These records also describe Robert Abrams interactions with other political leaders, state agencies, and the New York City government. The series contains public statements, proclamations, testimony transcripts, letters to constituents, and other background materials pertaining directly to other press releases or the subjects they address. Included also are issues of Senior Citizens’ Newsletter from 1973-1975, each of which is approximately six pages, covering topics of interest to the elderly and efforts to serve this part of the Bronx community.
