New York State Attorney General campaign files, 1969-1979

Scope and Contents

This series contains approximately 5.5 cubic feet of material documenting Robert Abrams campaigns for Attorney General of New York State in 1974 and 1978. Timothy Gilles appears to have been a member of Abrams’ campaign staff during both elections, working in the press and research divisions. The series spans the years 1969-1979 with a significant amount of undated records.

The majority of records in this series are related to Robert Abrams’ successful race for Attorney General in 1978 with a limited amount of documents from his previous race in 1974. The series consists of correspondence, news clippings, reports, endorsements, position papers, campaign literature, and other related materials. The records describe Abrams’ political opponents and allies as well as his positions on numerous public issues. Topics addressed in this series include crime, consumer protection, utilities, minorities, banking, environmental protection, transportation, education, the Democratic Party, and other political issues. The series also contains a significant amount of clippings from newspapers and periodicals from across New York State about Abrams and his opponents in the 1978 election, Dolores Denman and Michael Roth.
