Brooklyn Board of Education directories, 1882-1896

Scope and Contents

Directories of members and officials of the board of education. Published annually on a school year basis. Title varies: cover title variously “Board of Education, Brooklyn N.Y.” and “Department of Public Instruction, Brooklyn N.Y.”. Beginning with the 1888-89 directory, there is a title page: “Members, Officers, and Committees of the Board of Education.”

The directories include, for board members, name, residence address, business address, and committee assignments. For administrative officials: title and residence address. For each school: school address, board members on “local committee” for that school, principal’s name and residence address (and, beginning with 1887-1888, janitor’s name and residence address). Also included is a list of music and drawing teachers (apparently centrally organized and serving more than one school each).
