Special and delayed birth certificates issued for births that occurred in Westchester County and the Borough of the Bronx, 1876, 1888-1891, 1895-1909
Scope and Contents
Consists of birth certificates issued upon application to the Department of Health for a birth that was not registered at the time of its occurrence. These kinds of certificates are identified as "special births," "special birth papers," and "delayed and imperfect births." These records include births that occurred in areas of Westchester County that were annexed into New York County prior to 1898 and births that occurred in the Borough of the Bronx after it was created. Information recorded on the special and delayed birth certificates generally include: name of child, sex [gender], color [skin complexion], date of birth, place of birth (street and number); father’s name, residence, birthplace, age, and occupation; mother’s name, name before marriage, residence, birthplace, age, number of previous children and how many now living (in all); date of report of special/delayed/imperfect birth; and name and address of person making the report. The date of the material in this subseries reflect the date of birth and not the date the special or delayed certificate was filed. Note that for some years there is only one or a few birth certificates issued for that year. These records are part of accession ACC-2011-016 (12 cubic feet). You can search the New York City birth index online via the German Genealogy Group database (or other online resource) to find the birth certificate number and then search the NYCMA Historical Vital Records website to find the digitized certificate.
