City of New York death certificates, 1866-1897

Scope and Contents

Consists of death certificates filed in the City of New York, New York County, 1866-1897. These include death certificates for deaths that occurred in the areas of Westchester County that were annexed into the City and County of New York in 1874 and 1895 and are now part of the Borough and County of the Bronx. Information recorded on death certificates before 1898 generally include: name of decedent, date of death, cause of death, specific place of death, place of burial, place of birth of decedent, residence at death, occupation, marital status, and how long decedent resided in New York City. By 1874, the birthplace of the parents of the decedent was also included. The names of the decedent’s parents were not listed until 1881.
