Civil War Draft Riot claims (ACC-2010-074), circa 1863-1868

Scope and Contents

This series contains 131 draft riot claims and a group of claim-related documents created by the Special Committee on Draft Riot Claims, circa 1863-1868. The claims, all handwritten, can include inventories of household possessions, retail and manufacturing items and equipment, affidavits and testimonials supporting the claims, evaluation of the claims by inspectors, and payment authorizations by the Office of the Comptroller. The claim-related documents include testimonials to support a claim; twenty-four demand for payments; a photocopy of a list of eight claims; a listing war-related and riot-related expenses for the "city and county;" the decision by the Board of Supervisors to adopt a recommendation by the Special Committee authorizing payment of specific amounts to 45 claimants and denying the claims of 91 claimants; and memoranda and correspondence related to the draft riot claims.
